Minister Zappone welcomes players Big Issue National Street League Soccer

Independent Minister and Dublin South West TD Katherine Zappone has welcomed more than 200 players in 24 teams to the Big Issues National Street League Soccer Finals at The Dublin Postal Sports & Social Club at Kiltipper. The Minister joined men and women players, organisers and sponsors as well as champions on the homeless issue, Fr Peter McVerry and Brother Kevin Crowley.

In addition to national honours the players were also being watched by selectors for the Irish men’s and women’s teams for the Homeless World Cup.

“Soccer has the power to transform lives. The skills, passion and excitement on display in Kiltipper is proof of this. As Minister I am committed to ensuring all our young people have access to sport. The Big Issue League and other sport focussed on children and teenagers who are homeless have a huge role to play. My Department recognises that and this year is providing over €20,000 to the league and the FAI for its work in this area. I note plans for the Street League to expand further – and I can confirm that they can count on me as a supporter in Government.”
